My workshops are designed around sharing and teaching field techniques of bird photography from 50+ years of being a birder and 30+ years as a bird photographer. From the numerous approaches to photographing each different species of bird, I will show you how to control all the variables to bring the bird into a perfect setting for that particular species and have it all in your camera's viewfinder.
My many years of an art background helps in understanding composition, balance and form and I teach how to use all those to create artistic beautifully pleasing images.
I have been teaching for many years and have a passion to share the joy I get from the results of the techniques I use. The time in the workshop belongs to you and I will work tirelessly to make your experience exceed your expectations. I spend many hours if not days pre-scouting for the workshop.

We will spend up to two days working from blinds on private property. The property has a creek and a pond that hosts Belted Kingfishers. There are stocked feeders on the property along with numerous nest boxes for Tree and Violet-green Swallows, Western and Mountain Bluebirds. The feeders draw in several species of birds that we will be doing setups for, and we will also photograph them in flight. The rest of the workshop time we will be going into the field to pre-scouted locations to work on cavity nesters and birds on territory.

Brian E. Small and Alan Murphy co-lead the workshop. This workshop is based on a private 1500 acre ranch owned by birders who have been attracting birds for many years.
The ranch owner feeds the birds daily year round so the activity at the blinds is very busy. This is an excellent location to get some of the California specialties, such as Yellow-billed Magpie, Band-tailed Pigeon, California Thrasher, Nuttall's Woodpecker and many others. We also have opportunities for Golden Eagle. This workshop will be designed to target each species and work the situation to get the ultimate image of that bird. There are many different ways to control the setup for each species and you will take away the knowledge of these techniques to use wherever you shoot around the country. We will also photograph all these species in flight allowing you to come away with award winning images.
"Alan the workshop was a great workshop. You were on your “A” game, and the three new participants saw you doing what Alan does better than anyone else. Giving them prime sets and prime photo opportunities. You are one of the best in the workshop world."
