Water Drip

This is my set-up that I have been using during the Spring and Fall migration on the Upper Texas Coast.
I have an elavated pond made out of a bucket with a 2 foot X 2 foot piece of plywood on top.
I place a few rocks around the edges of the plywood and lay a piece of pond liner on top.
The final touch is running a small drip hose to it so there is always fresh running water.

As the birds make their way down to the water, they pause on my perches that I have set up.

    Hey Alan,

cool to see you blogging, too. It’s always nice to see some of you secrets :) Those set ups look simple, but even with such a picture it’s not easy to copy them :)
The Redstart is outstanding. That perch with the dry leafes is simply percfect :) Wish you would have put the picture in a format that fits your blog size so that it is not squeezed into the tight frame.

    Keep posting :)

    Cheers,

    Jan

Hey Jan, I’m still trying to figure out why the redstart image looks squeezed? any ideas?

  3. Jan Says:

yes, go to your dashboard and click on the post and then on the picture. An “edit image” option appears.
Either you adjust the alignment, this might help. Or you adjust the size by pulling down the %-bar on the left site till it fits in your text.
I always use center alignment. Looks like when you uploaded your picture the original size stayed instead of a size that fits your frame.

    congrats, you got it :)

These nice looking themes like you and I use are really nice, only horizontal images are not so nicely displayed, because of their small size.

I’m glad to hear you have a book coming out on this subject. Do you have a notification list we can sign up on, so that we can receive an email telling us that the e-book is now available?

  6. Alan Says:

Hey Scott, I will keep you informed when the book comes out. Thanks, Alan.

    Beautiful technique.
Regarding the image looking squeezed, check if the height and width of the image are specified in the tag in html. If they are then that could be the cause.

I am goping to try to duplicate the dripsetup shown. My question is about the out of focus object in the background. Is that a blind from which you photograph?

  9. Alan Says:

Hi Jack, yes that is the doghouse blind made my Ameristrep. I wanted to show how I set up the blind in relation to the drip pond.

  10. Bryan Says:

Alan, is the drip hooked up to something like a hose or is it circulating water from somewhere? Battery operated? Thanks.

  11. Alan Says:

    Hey Bryan,
The small drip hose is attached to a regular garden hose.
FYI, I go through all the details of drip photography in my new eBook that’s coming out this Dec.

Already ordered the CD through Artie’s website. Looking very forward to it. If I can convince my wife to let me spend the money for your workshops, you’ll see me either this spring or next.

I have used a drip on travels using the H2O camping solar shower bag which can be filled and drip adjusted. One problem is that it is heavy and trying to find the right support for it. It also can be put flat on a table(picnic table, etc) and drip hose placed over the edge and still drips well.
Main problem with this is the weight and getting it high enough to drip into an elevated situation like the one you have here. MAin advantage is you do not have to be near a running water source.
